The president of G&Y, Gareth Jones, arrived in Japan in the late 1980s during the bubble. With an undergraduate degree in chemistry and microbiology as well as qualifications and experience as a teacher (see below), he entered Meiji University to study for his MA and then a doctorate. This helped him find his feet as a linguist and then provided him with a broad range of experience working for Japanese companies for 30 years in Japan. His experience ranges from the head office of DKB (now Mizuho Bank) to smaller investor relations firms. Gareth’s expertise draws on experience in Japanese and English contract negotiations, production of PR and advertising material, and corporate material such as integrated reports, CSR reports, governance reports and a large variety of technical translation and interpreting work, only a small sample of which can be covered here.
In his early days his role as an interpreter put him in top-level contract-negotiating positions. Notably, he worked on the contract negotiations as part of the Adidas team at Hitachi Transport systems. This job involved the contract negotiations between Hitachi and the new Adidas Japan Head Office. Hitachi was seeking, and won, the contract to handle all Adidas products in Japan from customs clearance, warehousing, transport, to the point of sale. This job also entailed later working with the IT team to sort out compatibility problems with the Adidas and Hitachi computer systems.
As a consultant/translator/writer he has written and published a great many annual reports including the Nikkei Shimbun award for best annual report (Benesse Annual Report). Gareth has also taken charge of many integrated reports as consultant/translator/writer in fields that include chemical, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing companies. In addition, he has also worked on annual reports for Banks—DKB (now Mizuho), Shinsei Bank, Tokai Bank and more.
Gareth had extensive experience at Sokkia where he worked in PR, advertising and sales of precision instruments such as theodolites, GPS technology and levels. This included not only translation/interpreting but also working with a large Japanese team to coordinate huge special events at engineering and surveying expos.
Gareth originally began his career as an educator teaching maths, chemistry and Japanese in the 1980s before coming to Japan. In Japan he taught in-service teaching courses at the Saitama Education Center. These courses were compulsory for Monbusho English teachers in Saitama and every high school English teacher in Saitama was required to attend a one-week seminar in their first, fifth and tenth years. Back in the late 1980s saying Gareth taught every high school English teacher in the prefecture of Saitama would have been completely accurate. He also was the Judge at prefectural speech contests and was the editor of the prefectural high school teachers’ monthly magazine.
This broad range of expertise led Gareth to set up his successful translating and interpreting company (G&Y Translation KK) which also took on an English School (G&Y English School).
